Travelling With Kids.

Travelling With Kids.

When we take family holidays, we tend to visit the same places over and over again.

I’ve been visiting Bluey’s Beach over summer for many years and that’s primarily because we stay in a house. Booking a house when you’ve got kids really helps give you and them the space to have a proper holiday. We followed the same logic when we took them to Europe earlier in the year staying in apartments so we could spread out, pour a bowl of cereal and provide some normality for them in the craziness of overseas travel.

My big thing on holidays is activities. You want millions of them up your sleeve for the car, the plane and when you arrive. The key to a good house holiday is to have a plan. Structure each day around an activity or an outing, add a rest and then fill the remainder with creative, relaxing activities.

We keep a bag in the boot (permanently) that’s filled with colouring books, puzzles and pencils.

Do it and don’t look back.

Five Local Kid Cool Stays.

Stayz.com.au‘s recently released list of 4 Unique Places To Stay and  I’m wondering if it’s time to switch things up this year.

We could spend a week in a luxury treehouse amongst North Queensland’s lush canopies, or live it up in a castle-like retreat in Adelaide Hills.

Check out what properties made the list.

The Canopy Rainforest Tree Houses are five luxury timber and glass treehouses located in the rainforest canopy on the banks of the Ithaca River in Atherton Tablelands, Queensland. Features include king beds, double spas, fireplaces, fully self-contained kitchens and balconies with a BBQ and hammock. CLICK TO BOOK

Captain’s Cottage in Long Beach, Batemans Bay, New South Wales has an authentic lighthouse attached to the main property. Located next to the beach, you can paddle in the water, go fishing in front of the cottage or explore the rock pools at each end of the 1km long beach. Ideal for families, the cottage has three living areas, three open decks (one including a six person spa), a screened sunroom and covered deck area. CLICK TO BOOK

Down to Earth B&B in South Australia’s Coober Pedy is an underground, self-contained apartment on the edge of the Coober Pedy Opal Fields. The property comes with its own telescope, available to use for those interested in observing the night skies and there is also a plunge pool for guests to cool down in the summer heat. Castle Keep in Mount Lofty, Adelaide Hills was voted the Most Romantic Place to stay in South Australia at the Stayz Holiday Rental Awards 2012. The property is an enchanting multi-storey castle-like retreat with stone spiral staircase, an embellished stone baronial fireplace, early 19th century carved furniture, hand painted ceilings and a Juliet balcony on the first floor. Stuff To Do.

LISTEN: The Magic TreeHouse Series by Mary Pope Osbourne (AudioBook). Jack and his little sister Annie are just two regular kids from Frog Creek, Pennsylvania. Then they discover a mysterious tree house packed with all sorts of books…and their lives are never the same! My kids love, love these books and there are many of them which means you can fill a whole holiday with their stories. We have rest time in the afternoon on holidays and I call it ‘listen & lie”. It’s when the kids lie on their beds, choose a book they want to listen to for an hour and just chill out. I may or may not choose to have a lie without a listen at the same time… Check out the audio books selection on iTunes and thank me later.

MAKE: Paint, glue, stick, collage, draw, sew – any activity that offers one or more of these activities and I’m in. I have a plastic box that’s full of craft stuff – ribbons, paper, paint, scissors – and I pack it with all the other holiday stuff. We add to it every year and find a way to incorporate stuff we find on the beach or the bush into an artwork of some kind. Last summer we pressed flowers (google it) – it’s something my Mum did with me and my sisters and I loved it. We also made an ant farm and collected silk worms from the local mulberry bush.

DO: The Girls & Boys Big Holiday Book of Fun: If you haven’t discovered this book then your life is about to change. They are the coolest activity books full of puzzles, drawings, mazes and just great stuff to do. There’s a boys and girls version.
